How Quick-Draw works

What does Quick-Draw do?

Two things. It gives the Equipment Reaction, so you can play it from your hand at any time, even during combat or on your opponent's turn. And when you play it, it attaches to a unit you control without you paying its Equip cost.

Core Rules 819.1.b, 819.1.d, 813.1.c.1Riftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

Do I pay the Equip cost when I play a Quick-Draw card?

No. You pay the card's own cost to play it, and Quick-Draw attaches it for free. You pay the Equip cost only if you use Equip later, for example after the unit carrying it leaves the board.

Can I use its Equip ability at Reaction speed too?

No. Quick-Draw only changes when you can play the card from your hand. Its Equip ability still works only in your own Main Phase, outside showdowns and with nothing on the chain.

Core Rules 151.2Riftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

Can I attach it to a unit at a battlefield?

Yes. The Equipment is played like any gear, then attaches to a unit you control and goes to that unit's location, wherever it is.

Core Rules 819.1.d, 435.4

What if I don't control any units?

You can still play it, but its attach ability has no unit to choose, so the Equipment stays in your base unattached. You can Equip it later.

Core Rules 149.2, 355.8

Can I give my other Equipment Quick-Draw?

Jax, Unmatched does. Riot's errata changed him to read "Your Equipment everywhere have Quick-Draw", so while you control him you can play any of your Equipment as a Reaction, and each attaches as it's played.

Riftbound Spiritforged FAQ

Does Quick-Draw stack?

No. A second instance does nothing, so Jax, Unmatched doesn't make Long Sword, which already has Quick-Draw, attach twice.

Core Rules 819.2

Example: Long Sword in the middle of combat

Your opponent attacks your 3 Might unit with a 4 Might unit. During the combat's showdown, you play Long Sword for 2 energy and one Fury power. Quick-Draw lets you play it as a Reaction, then attaches it to your defender without its Equip cost. With the Sword's +2 Might, your unit is 5 Might: it survives the 4 damage, and its 5 damage kills the attacker.

Official rulings

Riot's own words, from its rules articles.

  1. The new Quick-Draw keyword lets you play (and consequently attach) Equipment straight from your hand at Reaction speed. That is because Quick-Draw cards inherently have Reaction as a nested part of Quick-Draw. In addition to granting Reaction, this keyword is also a Play Effect that attaches the played Equipment directly to a unit you control—no need to pay the Equip cost. This time. Quick-Draw doesn’t, however, change when you can use an Equipment’s Equip ability, only when you can play it from your hand.

  2. How does Jax, Unmatched work?

Jax, Unmatched grants Quick-Draw to Equipment in your hand, which works as far as letting you play them as Reactions… but doesn’t work so well when the Equipment hits the board and the other part of Quick-Draw tries to take effect. We’re fixing that.
