How Weaponmaster works

How does Weaponmaster work?

When you play the unit, you may choose an Equipment you control and pay its Equip cost, minus one power of any domain, to attach it to the new unit. It's optional.

Core Rules 821.1.b, 821.1.cRiftbound Spiritforged FAQ

Can Weaponmaster take an Equipment from another unit?

Yes. It can choose an Equipment that's already attached to another of your units and move it over, even though an attached Equipment can't use its own Equip ability.

Core Rules 821.1.c, 725.3Riftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

How much do I pay?

The Equipment's Equip cost minus one power of any domain. Effects that change Equip costs count, but discounts for playing an ability don't, because the Equip ability isn't actually played. If the Equip cost has no power in it, like Protector's Shield's 1 energy, you pay it in full.

Core Rules 821.1.c.2, 821.1.c.2.a, 821.1.c.3

Does Weaponmaster work outside my Main Phase?

Yes. It attaches the Equipment whatever the usual timing of Equip, so it works whenever you play the unit, even during a showdown.

Core Rules 821.1.b, 151.2

Does Weaponmaster use the Equipment's Equip ability?

No. The Equip ability isn't activated; Weaponmaster only uses its cost. That's how it works on an Equipment that's already attached, whose own Equip ability is inactive.

Core Rules 821.1.c.6, 725.3

What if the Equipment can't be attached?

Then nothing happens, and it stays where it was, still attached to any unit it was on. That includes an Equipment with no Equip cost: Weaponmaster can choose it, but there's no cost to pay.

Core Rules 821.1.c.1, 821.1.c.4, 821.1.c.5

Does Weaponmaster do anything after the unit is played?

No. It only triggers when you play the unit, and does nothing while the unit is on the board.

Core Rules 821.2

Example: Passing the Spinning Axe

Spinning Axe (+3 Might) is attached to one of your units. You play Sentinel Adept, a 3 Might unit with Weaponmaster, and choose the Axe. Its Equip cost is one power of any domain, and Weaponmaster takes exactly that off, so you pay nothing. The Axe moves from your other unit to Sentinel Adept, who becomes 6 Might.

Official rulings

Riot's own words, from its rules articles.

  1. The coolest part? It can even choose Equipment that’s already attached to a different unit! Remember, inactive text like Equip costs can still be referenced by other effects. Weaponmaster can check on that cost and reference it to determine the cost you need to pay.

Riftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

  2. Weaponmaster as a keyword is always meant to be optional. … It is always a choice on whether or not to use this play ability.

    Riftbound Spiritforged FAQ

  3. What happens when I choose an attached Equipment with Orianna, Lady of Clockwork?

It detaches from the object it is attached to when it becomes a unit. Although its equip ability can be activated and it can be targeted by Weaponmaster triggers, it cannot attach to a unit; nothing will happen when those abilities resolve.
