How Equip works

How does Equip work?

Pay the Equip cost printed next to the keyword and choose a unit you control. The Equipment attaches to that unit, which gets the Equipment's Might bonus and the abilities in its effect text.

When can I use Equip?

Equip is an activated ability of a gear, so you use it during your own Main Phase, when nothing is on the chain and no showdown is going on. Quick-Draw Equipment can be played and attached as a Reaction, but that doesn't change when their Equip ability works.

Core Rules 818.1, 151.2Riftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

Can I equip a unit at a battlefield?

Yes. Equip can choose any unit you control, wherever it is. The Equipment goes to the unit's location as it attaches, and that doesn't count as a move.

Core Rules 818.1.c.2, 435.4, 435.4.a

Can I use Equip to move an Equipment to another unit?

No. While an Equipment is attached, its printed rules text is inactive, Equip included, so you can't use it. A unit with Weaponmaster can still take the Equipment as that unit is played.

What happens to the Equipment when the unit dies?

You keep it. When a unit leaves the board, its Equipment detaches and stays behind. If that happens at a battlefield, the Equipment is recalled to your base in the next cleanup, and you can equip it to another unit.

Core Rules 719.5, 436.4.a, 436.4.bRiftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

Can a unit carry more than one Equipment?

Yes. The unit gets the Might bonus and the effect text of every Equipment attached to it.

Core Rules 435.1.b.1, 435.1.c, 435.1.d

Does an attached Equipment's own text still work?

Its printed rules text doesn't, so Spinning Axe's own Temporary can't kill it while it's attached. Text that another card gives it still works: an attached Equipment given Temporary by Turn to Dust is killed in its controller's next Beginning Phase.

Can spells that affect gear hit an attached Equipment?

Yes. An attached Equipment is still a gear on the board, with all its types and tags, so spells and abilities can still choose it.

Core Rules 718.5, 718.5.a, 718.5.b

Example: Doran's Blade on Lucian

You have Doran's Blade (+2 Might) in your base and Lucian, Merciless, a 3 Might unit, at a battlefield. In your Main Phase you pay the Blade's Equip cost of one Body power and choose Lucian. The Blade attaches and joins him at the battlefield, making him 5 Might. If Lucian later dies there, the Blade detaches, is recalled to your base in the next cleanup, and can be equipped to another unit.

Official rulings

Riot's own words, from its rules articles.

  1. You simply pay the Equip cost listed next to the ability, choose a unit you control, and attach the Equipment to that unit.

Riftbound Core Rules: Spiritforged Patch Notes

  2. Notably, because of the way rules text becomes inactive when you attach these cards to a unit, you can’t use an Equip ability if it’s already attached to something. On the bright side, if the unit carrying it is killed or otherwise leaves the board, you keep the gear! Equip it to the next contender and continue the fight.

  3. What costs does Ezreal, Prodigy reduce? Does he reduce Repeat costs? Accelerate costs? Equip costs?

Ezreal can’t reduce Equip costs. That’s an activation cost for an ability, so it’s neither optional nor additional.

    Riftbound Spiritforged FAQ

  4. If I play Turn to Dust on an attached Equipment, will the Equipment die in the Beginning Phase?

Yes. The granted Temporary keyword will be active. It will trigger and kill the equipment in its controller’s next Beginning Phase. … Attached Equipment only have their printed rules text made inactive per rules 718.2. and 135.4. This means that any granted rules text will still be active; granted Temporary will trigger and kill attached Equipment and granted Deflect will add Any RuneAny Rune to the cost of enemy spells and abilities that target them.

    Unleashed Rules FAQ and Clarifications

  5. What happens when I choose an attached Equipment with Orianna, Lady of Clockwork?

It detaches from the object it is attached to when it becomes a unit. … In this rules update we’ve clarified that units cannot be attached to other game objects. If a unit were to be attached to a game object, it would need to stop being a unit first. If a non-unit game object becomes a unit, it will detach from anything it is attached to as it becomes a unit.
