Show Off is a Passive Ability keyword.
832.1.b
Show Off is formatted as “[Show Off] [Object].”
832.1.c
Show Off is functionally short for “As you play [me/this], you may reveal [Object] from your hand and/or pick [Object] from among friendly game objects on the board.”
832.1.c.2
The decision of whether or not to Show Off is made by the controller of the chain item with Show Off during the process of finalizing it.

How Show Off works

What does it mean to show off?

As you play the card, you either reveal a matching card from your hand or pick a matching card or token you control on the board. If you do, the card's "if you showed off" effect turns on. Showing off is optional.

Core Rules 832.1.cCore Rules: Radiance Patch Notes (Effective October 16, 2026)

Does the card I show off go anywhere?

No. A card you reveal from your hand stays in your hand, and a card you pick on the board stays where it is. Only cards from your hand are revealed; friendly cards on the board are just picked.

Core Rules 832.1.c, 425.1.a.2Core Rules: Radiance Patch Notes (Effective October 16, 2026)

Can I show off a facedown card?

No. A facedown card has none of its front side's characteristics, so it isn't a unit, a Mech or a card with Hidden while it's facedown. That's why Gutter Guardian can't show off your hidden cards on the board.

What if the card I showed off changes afterward?

It doesn't matter. Whatever the card checks about it, like a unit's Might, is locked in the moment you show it off. Primordial Roar deals damage equal to the Might the unit had when you showed it off, even if it's buffed, shrunk or returned to hand before the spell resolves.

Can I show off a mix of cards from my hand and the board?

Yes. When a card asks for a group, like "five units with different names", you can reveal some from your hand and pick the rest on the board, as long as the whole group qualifies.

Core Rules 832.1.c.3

Can the card I showed off also pay the card's cost?

Yes. Riot's example is a spell with Show Off a Mech and an additional cost of discarding 1: you can reveal a Mech from your hand to show it off and then discard that same Mech to pay the cost.

Core Rules 832.1.c.4

Can a unit show itself off?

No. A card you're playing moves from your hand to the chain, which isn't part of the board, so it's in neither place Show Off looks. That's why units' reminder text says you pick another friendly one.

Core Rules 354, 108.1, 832.1.c

Example: Primordial Roar meets Frigid Touch

You play Primordial Roar, showing off a friendly unit with 4 Might, and choose an enemy unit with 3 Might. In response, your opponent plays Frigid Touch, giving your unit -2 Might this turn. Primordial Roar still deals 4 damage and kills the enemy unit, because your unit's Might was checked when you showed it off.

Official rulings

Riot's own words, from its rules articles.

  1. When you Show Off something, you reveal a card from your hand that matches the requirement, or pick a friendly game object (card or token) on the board with the appropriate characteristics.

Core Rules: Radiance Patch Notes (Effective October 16, 2026)

  2. Can I show off a facedown card at a battlefield with the Show Off ability of Gutter Guardian?

You cannot. Facedown cards don’t have any referenceable characteristics from their front side. … Note that only the card from hand is revealed with Show Off. You don’t reveal the friendly objects on the board that you’re Showing Off, so you can’t reveal the facedown card even if you wanted to.

Core Rules: Radiance Patch Notes (Effective October 16, 2026)

  3. What happens when the unit on the board that I Showed Off with Primordial Roar is returned to my hand with Star-Crossed? Do I still deal damage? What about if I play Lunar Boon and discard the unit from hand?

You still deal damage in both scenarios. Any referenced characteristics of shown off objects are locked in when you show them off. Regardless of what subsequently happens to them, their information will be able to be checked by the card that showed them off. This also means that giving a unit +MightMight or -MightMight after showing that unit off will not affect the damage dealt by Primordial Roar; it’s too late by that point.
